Internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) Career Pathway Program
needed by 2032
Nearly half of Ontario’s nurses in 2023 were educated outside the province. However, poor workforce planning and the inadequate integration of immigrant health workers has many leaving the industry.
A study by the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) found that 49.4% of nurses who have left the profession since 2022 are under 40 years old.
The Training Centre provides assistance for IENs to navigate the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) and successfully register with the College of Nurses on Ontario (CNO).We offer:
- Financial support
- Assistance with required documentation
- Translation services
- Support to ensure English language proficiency
- Educational support to prepare for Practical Nurse exam with the CNO
- Legal support for immigration
- Access to a variety of employment opportunities with employer participants
Vocational Training for Personal Support Workers (PSWs)
Employers and workers agree that PSW education programs do not give new graduates a real sense of what long-term care is like, which leaves them unprepared for the workload and stresses of the job.

SEIU Healthcare and employers across the province can be the solution. With our collective knowledge of Ontario’s healthcare system, we are best positioned to create and maintain a new standard for healthcare education that enhances quality of care, learning experiences, and breaks down geographical barriers to enable students to access courses from anywhere at anytime. We will connect workers to sustainable employment and will provide the most experienced instructors in the country, which is currently lacking for PSW’s.
The future:
A Private Career College under the Ontario Career Colleges Act that provides accredited vocational training to become or upgrade to a PSW. We provide employers subsidized education for new entrants and incumbent workers.
Upward Mobility & Career Enhancement
We partner with healthcare employers to create programs that promote upward career mobility. Starting with PSW’s, we provide a pathway to higher classifications in the healthcare sector. We also provide existing internationally trained healthcare workers in a lower classification the opportunity to become fully licensed through our IEN Career Pathway Program.
Through our commitment to maintaining and enhancing the quality of care in Ontario, the Training Centre also provides micro-credentials for incumbent workers at participating employers. We focus on:
- Competency-based skills that are linked to job opportunities and/or financial incentives
- Competency-based skills that provide an opportunity for upward career mobility while making members more competitive in the labour market
These short-duration learning opportunities allow individuals to quickly obtain new skills, access high-demand employment, and can be assessed and recognized for employment or further learning opportunities in the future. Each micro-credential will provide:
